International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

March 21, 2022

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination recognizes that the injustices and prejudices fuelled by racial discrimination take place every day. It is a day to reflect and re-commit our efforts to combat all forms of racial discrimination.1

The 2022 edition of the International Day focuses on the theme “Voices for Action Against Racism.” Racism in all its forms is contrary to the teaching of Christ and the commandment to love our neighbour as ourselves. The gospel of Christ and racial discrimination are incompatible.

We began this year under the motto “Together in Christ”, which includes the message of living in peace and harmony with our neighbour. The Lord Jesus explained that our relationship to God completely depends on our relationship to our neighbour. We cannot choose our neighbour - our neighbour is the person whom God has put next to us to stand together in solidarity and help each other for eternal salvation. The love for God and the love for our neighbour are inseparably linked.

We can read in 1 John 4: 19-21 (NIV), “We love because He first loved us. Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother or sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. And He has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.”

In our words and in our actions, let us stand against racism and thus demonstrate the unconditional love of God for all people.
