THE GOOD NEWS
Article by: Shepherd F. Yaeger
When we consider trying to become a true Christian, we must do our best to understand the gospel of Jesus Christ and to live according to it. The sermon on the mount as recorded in Chapters 5, 6, and 7 of the gospels of Matthew provides a wonderful summary of how to live according to Christ’s teachings. These chapters teach us, among many things, how to pray, how to love and honour God, and how to love our neighbour as ourselves.
It has been said that one of the best ways to learn a subject in-depth is to try to teach it or demonstrate it to another person. This also applies to the gospel. Rather than simply preaching the gospel as we understand it, we should use the gift of the Holy Spirit within us to demonstrate what it is to live
the gospel. In life, we will encounter many situations which will allow us to choose to respond and act according to Christ’s teachings or according to our human nature.
Christ commissioned His Apostles to “…make disciples of all nations”
… “teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you…”
(Matthew 28: 19-20). Our Apostles today have the same commission, to teach and spread the gospel of Christ, to bring hope and inspiration to all people in preparation for eternal future life with Him.
Let us support this great commission in our congregations, our families, and communities by being living examples of Christ’s teachings. We can share the love of God “who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth”
(1 Timothy 2: 4) with all
of our fellow human beings. It is essential for Christians to learn to love as Jesus did, to fulfill God’s will as Jesus did if we want to hear the words spoken to us “…Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world”
(Matthew 25: 34).
Let us pray and be watchful for the inspiration and opportunity to do our part to spread the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ.
