PRAYER
Author: District Elder R. Sokolowsky

Prayer is one of the four pillars of our faith, as we can read in Acts 2: 42: “And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.”

God speaks to us in the divine services, and we have the opportunity to speak to Him in our prayers. We can open our hearts completely to Him and tell Him everything: our concerns, our petitions, our intercessions—but above all our thanks and praises. We thank Him for what He has done for us in the past, what He does for us today, and what He will do for us in the future.

It is important that we believe that our heavenly Father will help us even before we pray to Him.

When Moses stood at the shore of the Red Sea with the children of Israel, he must have wondered: “How will God bring us out of this hopeless situation?” Not far in the distance, the Pharaoh’s army was approaching quickly and with nowhere to turn, the children of Israel cried out to Moses: “Have you brought us out of Egypt to die in the wilderness?”

Still not knowing how God was going to help them, he said with full trust in the Lord: “…Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today…” (Exodus 14: 13).

Only then did the Lord reveal to Moses how He would save them: “But lift up your rod, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it. And the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.” (Exodus 14: 16).

What a wonderful example of trust in God!

Have we stood before a situation in life where we felt that we had nowhere to turn? Have we ever felt: “There is simply no way out”?

Just as Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, let us raise our hands in prayer to God in trust that He will help us. Let us not be afraid, but stand still and remain calm. Our heavenly Father will help us—and sometimes it will be in a way that we would never have imagined. After all, Moses would certainly never have imagined that the Lord would part the sea!
