SEPTEMBER 2020
PRAYING FOR PEACE
Posted by: District Elder Rob Braun

Peace is something we pray for when we need it but often forgotten when we already have it. On September 21, 2020, united with all Christians from around the world, we have the opportunity to participate in the International Day of Prayer for Peace.

What type of peace should we be praying for? The dictionary has two basic definitions of peace.

1. “A state or period in which there is no war”, and
2. “Freedom from disturbance and tranquility”.

The question we must ask ourselves is, “Which type of peace am I going to pray for?”

For many of us, we have never had to experience a war like many of our brothers and sisters around the world. Let us not only forget those who have experienced wars but those who still must live through it everyday.

On the other hand, many of us have all experienced what it is like to live in a disturbance or without tranquility. These are not feelings that are pleasing to live with. What is the solution to this problem?

The first solution is written in Hebrews 12:14 (NLT) where it simply states, “Work at living in peace with everyone…”. The second and most well-known solution comes from Jesus Christ Himself, wherein Mark 12:31 (NLT) He simply says, “…Love your neighbour as yourself…”.

We know that for these two solutions to work it requires three things on our part: an honest effort, a desire to change, and help from God. Of course, these solutions are easy to read but putting into practice is a little more difficult. The Lord Jesus is our great example of this when He showed us how to pray and how to trust God. Jesus was the ultimate peacemaker when He bridged the gap between man and God. Through His example, we must believe that our prayers for peace will be heard and that God will make all things possible when we trust and believe in Him.

Let this year’s International Day of Prayer for Peace not only be a day on the calendar but one where we truly think and pray for peace around the world. When we love our neighbour and work at living in peace with them, then we will become peacemakers and true disciples of Jesus Christ.
