MUSIC - THE GIFT AND TOOL OF GOD
Posted by: District Elder Andrew Latorcai

Colossians 3:16 - Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Music, as God intended it, has been given to His creation in the form of gifts and talents to bring honour and glory to God and to praise Him.  It has been said that music is the proof of God’s existence. Moreover, this gift of music is given to the crown of God’s creation, human beings, but it can also be found in nature: in birds, weather, and other parts of God’s creation.

In order to properly praise God through music, it must exist as an expression of joy, awe, and thankfulness. A strong example is given in Holy Scripture in the Psalms. God has given us music to be a positive effect and influence on the listeners and performers. It can provide a wonderful example of harmony, unity, belonging and togetherness. The singing with our heart to the Lord consolidates and reinforces the message of God’s love in our hearts, minds, and souls.

There is a powerful purpose to music.
  • It can be used as a means to encourage each other. It lifts and refreshes our spirits and brings calm and peace to our souls.
  • Music can be used as a powerful tool for teaching and testifying. Especially for our children as experienced in Sunday School instruction.
  • It is a powerful expression of exaltation to God in our songs of praise and thanksgiving.
Therefore, we want to promote music as part of our divine services, teaching, and programs as much as possible as God would intend it.  We definitely miss something when music is not included in these godly encounters.

Especially as those with the gift of music, we do not seek glory for ourselves. The emphasis is on praising God. “We want to serve Jesus,” the Chief Apostle Schneider said recently after a concert in light of utilizing our talents, specifically the gift of music.  He spoke about how important it is to put the focus on Jesus Christ and to glorify Him. He continued,  “Moreover, music is an expression of love for the Lord and for the congregation. It is a message from God to the Church.”

Let us take comfort, strength, joy, and peace from God’s gift of music to us. Whether as listener, player, or singer. We thank Him for this wonderful gift and with every tune, hum, and whistle, we are reminded of God’s grace and goodness.
