“And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him.”
Luke 15: 20

When we review the parable of the prodigal son, the father is central to the story. Although the purpose of this story does not revolve around the father, it still highlights some outstanding attributes of the role of a father. Three points stand out.

First, the father loves his child dearly. Even though he has given an early inheritance at his child’s request, his child has abandoned him...yet he actively looks and waits for signs of his child’s return.

Second, he knows his child intimately. He recognizes the child after several years from a great distance. He must have noticed the walk or some other distinguishing feature. He runs to him, embraces him, and welcomes him without a word of anger or guilt.

Third, even in the face of credible opposition (the brother), the father not only defends his child, he rejoices at his child’s return. He embraces the reunion with full acceptance, generous gifts, and a family celebration.

We recognize that not all relationships are the same. Some perhaps never knew their Father. However, as we celebrate this Father’s Day, let us reflect on the care, sacrifice, and loyalty of those close to us in our father, our grandfathers or our mentors, whether with us or in the beyond. We can look at their love, their intimate knowledge of us and our ways, their loyalty, which makes us feel secure. For the fathers, let us all continue to try to live up to the ideals of the father image shown in this parable of Jesus, both naturally and spiritually.

As Christians, we bring thanks to our heavenly Father for the great gift of our natural father. This thankfulness will bring a response that God has promised to bless. Let us all rejoice together!!!
