A GIFT OF LOVE FROM GOD
Posted by: District Elder Bill Anker

Your Mother is one of God’s great gifts of love to you, each and every one. All of us have one, known or unknown, alive or in the beyond… This day, Mother’s Day, was first recognized in this format in the early 20th century but had previously existed in some form in almost every culture and people over thousands of years.

Let us all, on this day, honour our mother with our admiration and respect which is her due (Romans 13:7). When we can do this with all our heart, we please them, please our God, and bring peace to our own heart. It is interesting to note that the commandment to honour our parents speaks of your Father and your Mother; very specific...yours. Attached to this expectation of our heavenly Father is a promise and a great blessing, both of natural and spiritual consequence; the only commandment with a promise attached to it. This commandment is also consistent with the Christian message; love God above all things and your neighbour as yourself. There is no closer neighbour than your own mother.

So how do we honour them? We love them with all that we are and have. Our love for them is the ultimate forgiveness, which mends broken bridges, misunderstandings, differences of opinion… Our love will prompt us to gather with them, bring our gifts, listen to them, embrace them…. For those in the beyond, we think of them, taking time to pray for them, and taking care of the family they gave us, the family they still carry in their hearts.

So, let us on this day, take time to honour your mother, just as Jesus did. He made sure His mother would be cared for as He took one of His last moments on the cross to arrange for her care into the future (John 19: 26-27).

We honour our Mother, our heavenly Father, who gave us this gift, and look forward to the many blessings which still lie ahead of us.

Blessed Mother’s Day.
