Saskatchewan - Helping the Homeless
Nearly one-hundred participants from Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, Moose Jaw, Weyburn and Canora participated in the 2015 Move-A-Thon and travelled the width of Saskatchewan in order to raise money and awareness for the homeless in Canada. Approximately $12,400 was collected; as a result, the group was able to volunteer and donate to the following organizations:
The Friendship Inn
On Saturday, September 26th, pillars and youth volunteered at The Friendship Inn. The group helped set up and assisted with serving the food. The facility listed the New Apostolic Church as the “Sponsor of the Day” as enough funds were given to support the entire facility (food, program and staff). A tour was also provided and afterwards the group presented The Friendship Inn with a cheque for $5000!
The Saskatoon Lighthouse
On Saturday, October 3rd, pillars and youth volunteered at Saskatoon’s homeless shelter called The Lighthouse. Despite their large facility, there still wasn't enough room for all the homeless in the community. It was at this point in time the group realized the severity of the problem as they had to step over individuals sleeping on the street just to enter the building. The pillars and youth helped to set-up the facility and served food to over one-hundred individuals. A tour of the facility was also provided and at the end of the day a cheque was presented for $4000!
The remainder of Saskatchewan’s Move-A-Thon funds will go to help the needy in Regina and to an initiative in Nepal to help rebuild houses for over 25 homeless families.
