FEBRUARY 2018
THE LOVE OF FAMILY
Posted by: Bishop Neil Jansen

One of the greatest memories of my childhood is the sound of my mother’s voice calling out the door “lunch is ready”. I would run into the house and there it was, in all its glory, made just for me; a peanut butter and banana sandwich lightly sprinkled with sugar and laid perfectly on an old tin pie plate just so I could take it outside with me. Mothers are amazing!

When I was a child in our family home, I remember a plaque that hung on the wall and I have never forgotten the words inscribed on it:

“A house is made of brick and stone,
But a home is made of love alone.”

As God’s children it is very important in our lives to take time to reflect on the many blessings and experiences He has provided to us; especially the unending blessing of family, and congregational family. When we realize that the strength of our family allows us to endure all things, no matter what comes, we can then understand the depth and power of this gift which our heavenly Father has given us.

Some years ago an official holiday was set in the month of February:  Family Day.
As each year passes, I notice that something of great value is taking place. The young parents of today are actually spending this time with their children. This time for the family has become a way of life, and the relationship between children and parents has grown closer, and deeper.

The same applies in our congregations. I have often heard members say of their congregation, “this is my family” or “this is my spiritual home”. This deeply rooted feeling is a result of love, friendship, and security. It recalls a song that our Sunday school children once sang, and it began with the words:

“I’m so glad I’m a part of the family of God.”

Whether an individual family or a congregational family, there are many situations that come in life: there are great joys and there are many burdens that need to be carried. With the love of family, a home becomes a place of strength and support, and of happiness and joy.

You are never alone!

Let us take this time and this year to: cherish, serve, and love one another.  This gift of love is what makes a family. This gift of family is what makes a home.
