Calgary Central - 2012 Stampede Breakfast
Saturday, July 14, 2012

History
Every year in early July, the City of Calgary celebrates its western roots by putting on the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede.  Calgary's national and international identity is tied to the event. It is known as the "Stampede City” and carries the informal nickname of "Cowtown."

One of the main staples of the celebration is the free Stampede Breakfasts occurring throughout the city.  It serves as a means of showing our city’s hospitality.  In 2004, the Calgary Central congregation held its first Calgary Stampede Breakfast at its original location.  The first breakfast was deemed a success and as a result, the breakfast became a regular event for the congregation.  From 2005 to 2008 over 1,400 breakfasts were served.   In late 2008, the congregation was notified by the City that the land the church was built on was needed to build a light rail transit system to the west end of the city.  As a result, the breakfast was on hiatus for two years while the congregation occupied leased premises during the construction of its new premises.  The 2011 breakfast was the congregation’s first outreach event in its new premises in the Cougar Ridge neighbourhood in west Calgary.  This year marks the second breakfast in our new location.  Both the Calgary Stampede and our breakfast had a record breaking attendance this year!

The Event
The Stampede Breakfast was held on Saturday, July 14th from 9:00 a.m. to noon.  Most of the volunteers arrived by 7:30 a.m. to prepare for what we hoped would be approximately 300 – 400 breakfasts to be served.  By 10:30 a.m. we had exceeded our expected attendance and had to run to the nearest grocery store to buy more food and supplies!  As a result, by the end of the morning 607 breakfasts had been served!  Everyone had a great time with many expressing an interest and appreciation for the “new” church in the neighbourhood.

We were especially excited that Apostle Kreutner and Bishop Wagner and their spouses joined us for this event.

Many seniors from around Alberta also came and the Apostle held a Questions and Answers session with the seniors in the sanctuary.
